About

This website's purpose is to demonstrate the skills and hard work that I have achieved through my college assignments, including showing the assets I have developed for my Game Paper 2D, and creating 3D models for my Tiny Room Construction Project. It also displays an understanding of the present-day game industry through game theory and personal progression.

Planning A Portfolio

Here I created my plan for the portfolio by planning out how I want my future to go and also showing what line of work I wish to get into by showing what I must achieve to be able to obtain the job I desire.

Presenting a Portfolio

Here I talk about the portfolio that I created talking about how I produced my projects for the portfolio and talking about the design and why I used the layout?

I also made sure to talk about my suitability for my role and my strengths and weaknesses within the role.

Hi, I'm Brynmor Soper. I am 18 years old and I am currently a student studying at Confetti Creative Institute of Technologies in Nottingham.

At the moment I am aspiring to be a programmer/ level designer and I am developing my skills to achieve this through my 2 years of learning at Confetti.

Why I used this this layout?

To start off, I decided to use the work that I am most proud of because it displays a really positive first impression of my skills and the hard work that I am capable of. I believe I've shown this in my projects throughout my two years of learning at Confetti College. The work I am most satisfied with is shown at the front of my website, this is a spacesuit that I made using Solar Interactive, Paper 2D and the 3D model. As there was a futuristic theme going on throughout most of my projects, I decided to use the ARIAN font, as in my opinion, it best suited the theme. The rest of the projects that I am less satisfied with are mostly documents such as game design principles or the feasibility document. This is because my skill set is strongest when it comes to practical projects and this is why they aren't at the front of the website. I also explained how I created the projects in great detail to show that I am unquestionably the author who created them, considering copyright legislation and attributing contributions of content that belongs to someone else. The colour scheme I have kept simplistic, mainly using black and dark grey because I wanted to achieve a professional look. However, to make the website a little more appealing I used images for the background so that the website didn't look so mundane but more appealing to the user.

As you can see I mainly stuck to the black and grey design colour palette to make the website sleek and luxurious to make the website more professional in design. The white lines are for decoration.

How I produce my projects?

Straight off the back, the software I mainly use at the moment to make my projects is 'Unreal Engine' (which is game making software) and 'Maya' (which is 3D modelling software). I also made use of 'Blender' as it is a free and available modelling software.

I am mostly developing my skills at home in my free time where I tend to use 'Maya' whenever I can as I have had more learning experience on that particular piece of software. Usually, my skills tend to really shine through Unreal Engine, so I am currently aspiring to be a programmer or a level designer. Mainly I only plan on promoting the games I have on my website, but in the future, I plan on releasing a game on 'Steam' to see how a general audience would react to my project and see if it is popular. I also like to make sure I show how I made each individual project by displaying a step by step process of how I created the game (complete with the mistakes I made to show how I solved problems, including debugging.)

Suitability For role?

As I explained before, the role I want to play within the gaming industry is either in programming or level design. I have seen some great portfolios that demonstrate this, such as Hugo Peters, whom I took inspiration from for this website as he was brilliant at explaining how he developed code and how he created his projects. Using his methodology, I made sure to put a lot of emphasis on how I made my projects, essentially because I want to achieve merit in this exercise. During my time at Confetti, I have been developing my programming and level design skills, gaining more experience through 'Unreal' which is the software I use the most. I do think I am suitable for the roles, I just need to gain more detailed programming language knowledge which, fortunately, I have been gaining through 'Unreal'.  Also, I have a decent knowledge of mathematics (I passed maths with a level 5). I also have some decent creativity skills and I am able to generate ideas of my own when I am contemplating issues and challenges. This helps me with experimentation that gives me the ability to keep going until I get the outcome I intended.

I also know some 'Python' from Rushcliffe Secondary School where I did Computer Science in which we experimented and messed around with 'Python', 'Pseudocode' and 'Scratch'. Computer Science wasn't the only computer-based subject I studied at Rushcliffe School, I also did CIDA where we actually tried to make some games using 'Game Maker 8' (these were only 2D games though)

I also made a video which is sort of like an interview where I am asked a series of searching questions related to the topic where I explain my suitability for the role I wished to obtain within the industry.

My strengths and Weaknesses?

My Stengths

I am really effective in using 'Unreal', the game making software that I have been using lately, but I also have a decent knowledge of C++. I am very competent in level design as well. I can create pretty good practical projects making the level look natural. I am really good at producing great level work in a quick period of time and I also like to ensure my projects are handed in at the deadline (this tends to be particularly true for practical assignments where my skills shine more brightly).

My Weaknesses

I do tend to have some problems with procrastination. This is an issue I have tackled in my own time through starting work earlier and doing more work at home; making timetables to help me manage my time and work, and creating a work leisure time balance.

I'm also not as efficient at using software such as 'Maya' because generally, I struggle with 3D modelling, however, I definitely have great potential in this area as I have been improving my skills and so I have made a wonderful space suit as a 3D model for my creative project.

My goals and aspirations + How I Will Achieve them?

My goal for the next few months is to achieve merit across my practical and theory work, the reason why I'm trying to achieve this grade is that when I complete my course I would like to further my education in games production by going on the Games Production Course at Confetti run by Nottingham Trent University. However, if I do not achieve the grades I will have to be prepared to go onto the Games Technology course instead. I'm making reasonable progress in my practical work so far, but my theory assignments need more detailed work before I can achieve a merit level.

My goal for the future is to obtain a programmer/ level designer role within well-respected companies like Nintendo, Sony computer entertainment or Naughty Dog Inc. For example, even if 'The Last of Us 2' (Naughty Dog) received negative feedback I would still want to be employed by the company (even if EA, Ubisoft and Rockstar offered a role I'd accept it). Honestly, I will take what opportunities I can get, as long as I become a programmer/ level designer. I would also be willing to take a role in a company that wasn't an AAA title.

When I have obtained my goals within the gaming industry,  my ambition is to be part of an AAA game title, for example, 'The Witcher 3' compete for edition, 'Elden Ring' and the 'Uncharted' series. However, I don't mind if the company isn't an AAA title as I just want to be involved in a good game producing company, developing mechanics or creating environments, having fun developing games within a team/group. I can also look at companies near me to get started with game development like sumo digital which made games like Hitman 2 and Forza Horizon 4 which is now in Nottingham which is near me.

How Have I Maintained my Personal Brand Identity?

I did sign up to Linkedin UK at one point, but the problem was that I didn't actually take advantage of this opportunity and follow any game companies online, although later on I do intend to use this website to help me find a job.

Mostly I have managed to submit and updated my website many times, even though it is not available to the public eye yet. Again, I will do this, later on, to help me obtain a job.

I have organised the website on my mobile device though, so anyone can see the website on mobile operating systems. As well this, of course, makes the website available to mobile users that do not use computers or laptops

I do not currently have a logo for my website, but I have created a home page to show off the first projects I am most proud of.
